UV, Holograms and Barcodes on Novelty IDs Explained

Every FakeYourDrank novelty card is built with the same three security features you see on real licences: UV elements, holograms and scannable barcodes. This post explains what each feature does in plain language, so you understand exactly what you are ordering for your entertainment or creative project.

These cards are novelty items made for entertainment purposes. The features described below are part of how we recreate the look of real documents as closely as possible.

What the UV layer does

UV elements are printed images that only show up under blacklight. On real licences, states hide extra seals, maps or birth dates in UV ink. Our cards recreate that same effect.

On polycarbonate cards the UV is embedded between the plastic layers, which gives a strong and even glow. On standard PVC and Teslin cards the UV is applied as an overlay and can look fainter. Both behaviours are described on each product page so you know what to expect.

What holograms are for

Holograms are the shiny, moving images that change as you tilt the card. Real states use multispec holograms, and our cards carry state-matched designs. The hologram is one of the first things a person notices when a card is tilted under light.

You can see the actual hologram placement for your state on the product images or in the proof videos on the fake ID videos page.

How the barcode works

The back of most cards carries a 1D or 2D barcode. The barcode is encoded with the same details printed on the front of the card, so a scanner reads matching information. United Kingdom licences are the exception: real UK cards do not carry a scannable barcode, so those are checked visually and under blacklight instead.

Every US and Canadian card in the catalogue ships with a working barcode. The data is encoded at production time from the details you enter on the order page.

Why these features matter for a novelty card

If you are using a card for a film set, a creative project or a collection, the closer the security features look to the real thing, the better the result. UV, holograms and barcodes are the three details that separate a convincing novelty card from a plain printed prop.

For the strongest UV response, choose a polycarbonate card. The polycarbonate vs standard guide covers the material difference in detail.

Where to see the features before ordering

Each product page shows front, back and hologram photos. The proof videos show the cards moving under light, which is the best way to judge the hologram and UV effect from home. A clean photo also matters, so read how to take a good novelty ID photo. If you need the card image digitally, see virtual ID copies explained.

How the three features work together

The UV layer, the holograms and the barcode are designed as one package. The barcode carries the data, the hologram catches the eye in normal light and the UV layer confirms the card under blacklight. The way these three features are built is explained in the sections above, and together they give a novelty card the complete look of a modern licence.

This combination is the same on every FakeYourDrank card, and the proof videos show all three features moving under light. When you compare designs, look at the whole package instead of judging one photo alone. If you are still picking a design, read how to choose a state.

For entertainment projects with close-up shots, these details matter most on camera, so the material choice still applies: polycarbonate novelty IDs show the strongest UV.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do all cards include UV?

Yes. Every FakeYourDrank card includes UV elements, but the strength depends on the material. Polycarbonate has embedded UV, while standard cards use an overlay that can look fainter.

Will the barcode match the printed details?

Yes. The barcode is encoded from the same information printed on the front of the card, so scanners return matching data.

Do UK cards have a barcode?

No. Real UK licences do not carry a scannable barcode, so those cards are checked the same way: by UV, holograms and visual details.

Can I see the hologram before buying?

Yes. Each product page has hologram photos, and the videos page shows the cards moving so you can see how the hologram catches the light.

Which material has the best blacklight response?

Polycarbonate has the best blacklight response because the UV is embedded between layers rather than printed as an overlay.
